I Won't Split the Tip 50/50 When My Date Ordered Twice as Much
A dating dispute over whether to split the bill evenly when orders were wildly different.
👤 Morgan
On a third date with Casey, we went to a nice restaurant. I ordered a pasta ($22) and water. Casey ordered a steak ($45), two cocktails ($30 total), and dessert ($14). When the bill came ($140 with tax), Casey said "let's just split it." That's $70 each when my meal was $22. I suggested we each pay for what we ordered. Casey got quiet and said "that's not how you do a dinner date" and that it felt "transactional." I ended up paying the full bill to avoid an awkward scene, but I was annoyed. Casey texted later saying they had a great time and want to go out again. I said I'd like to take turns picking the restaurant. Casey said that sounded like I was "keeping score." I'm not cheap — I just don't think I should subsidize someone's surf and turf.

Morgan asked me on this date. Morgan also chose the restaurant. I did not realize it was a budget situation or I would have ordered differently. We had a great night and I thought we were both enjoying ourselves. When the bill came Morgan pulled out a calculator and went item by item on a date. A date. I have never felt more like a business transaction in my life. I paid my exact share. I have not heard from Morgan since and I do not think I want to.

# OFFICIAL RULING
The court finds that Morgan's mathematics are unimpeachable (32% agreement) but Casey's romantic sensibilities are not entirely without merit (23% agreement), leaving a decisive 45% of jurors too spiritually exhausted to pick a side. We therefore rule that both parties must attend their next dinner date separately, pay separately, and reflect separately on whether a calculator or vulnerability would have served them better.
