I Rented Out Our Spare Room Without Asking My Partner

A man listed the spare bedroom on Airbnb to help with mortgage costs. His girlfriend found out when a stranger showed up at the door.

👤 Nina
I share a home with Derek. We are not married. The mortgage is in his name but I pay half of everything including utilities and groceries and I have lived here for two years. Derek listed our spare room on Airbnb without telling me. I found out when a man rang the doorbell with a rolling suitcase. Derek said he did it because we needed extra money and he knew I would say no. He is right that I would have said no. Because I now share a bathroom with strangers and no one asked me. His name is on the deed but this is my home too.

The mortgage is $2,800 a month. Nina pays $900. I pay $1,900. The spare room sits empty. I listed it for three weekends a month, kept guests to the spare bathroom, and made $600 a month to close the gap. I did not tell Nina because I knew she would say no to something that costs her nothing and helps us a lot. The first guest was quiet and left the bathroom cleaner than he found it. Nina did not have to do anything except accept that the spare room is now generating income. She has filed a case on the internet about my house.

Official NACOL Ruling

The Court finds that while Defendant Derek's financial contribution to the mortgage substantially exceeds Plaintiff Nina's stated $900 monthly payment, his unilateral conversion of shared living space into a commercial enterprise without consent constitutes a breach of cohabitation's implicit social contract, notwithstanding that the actual jury could not be bothered to show up to render judgment at 0% to 0% with a single juror who apparently cast their ballot via fortune cookie. Case closed.
