My parents offered us $40,000 toward a house down payment, no strings attached. Diane said no without discussing it with me first. When I asked why, she said she did not want to feel indebted to my parents. My parents are generous people who give without expecting anything back. We have been saving for four years and are still $30,000 short. Diane turned down free money that would have gotten us into a house this year because of a feeling. I am not allowed to override her on this but I want the internet to know I think this is the wrong call.

I have met Marcus\'s parents twelve times. Every single time his mother has reminded me that she bought Marcus\'s first car, paid for his study abroad, and co-signed his first apartment. She does not give without keeping score. $40,000 is not a gift from them, it is a down payment on leverage. Marcus does not see it because it is his mother. I see it because it is not mine. I would rather save for one more year and own our home without owing anyone anything. Marcus thinks I am irrational. I think I am protecting us.
