I Told My Mom Her Cooking Has Always Been Bad

At a family dinner a 28-year-old finally told her mother the truth about her cooking after years of everyone pretending to enjoy it.

👤 Jess
My mom has been making the same five dinners my entire life. The chicken is always dry. The pasta is always overcooked. The soup is always canned broth with vegetables thrown in. For 28 years every family member has said it was great to avoid hurting her feelings. This Thanksgiving she made the turkey and it was genuinely inedible. I had one glass of wine and said Mom I love you but I think we should do a potluck next year because cooking has never really been your thing. She cried. My dad is not speaking to me. My sister said I was brave. I said what everyone was thinking.
VS
👤 Carol (Mom)
I have been cooking for this family for 35 years. Thanksgiving. Christmas. Every birthday. Every sick day. I got up at 5am to make that turkey. Jess ate my food for 28 years without one complaint. She chose Thanksgiving, in front of my husband and my other daughter, to tell me my cooking has always been bad. Not once was bad. Always. She did not suggest a potluck. She told me I was a bad cook and called it honesty. I called it cruel. There is a difference.

⚖️ The Verdict Is In

🤷 You're both right (it's complicated)

Official NACOL Ruling

This court finds that one juror achieving a mathematically impossible 0-0 split verdict suggests either a profound philosophical breakthrough or that the juror fell asleep mid-deliberation and submitted whatever was on the screen, both of which are equally valid grounds for declaring this case entirely unresolvable. The bench notes that Carol's 35 years of service meals and Jess's 28 years of polite suffering are both tragic in their own right, and recommends the family invest in a quality rotisserie chicken going forward. Case closed.
