I Told My Friend Group I Won't Split the Bill Evenly Anymore
A dinner table debate over equal bill-splitting when orders are unequal.
👤 Jamie
Every time my friend group goes out (6 people), someone suggests splitting the bill evenly. I'm on a budget and I order accordingly — a main and water. Meanwhile, others order apps, cocktails, steaks, and desserts. Last dinner, my share came to $85 when I ate $28 worth of food. I brought it up and said I'd like to just pay for my own from now on. My friend Leah said it "kills the vibe" to be nickel-and-diming at dinner and that it makes everyone uncomfortable. I said what makes ME uncomfortable is paying double for food I didn't eat. Leah said if money is tight I should just order more. The logic is baffling. Two friends agree with me in private but won't rock the boat. I'm not being cheap, I'm being broke.

Our friend group has been splitting bills evenly for four years. It has always averaged out. Jamie tracks every dollar and brings it up constantly. Last month Jamie ordered a glass of wine and a salad and then spent twenty minutes arguing about the bill while everyone sat there uncomfortable. Nobody else has a problem with the way we do it. Jamie has also borrowed money from people in the group and taken months to pay it back but is very precise about restaurant math. We are not splitting atoms. We are having dinner.
